BEST #1 to WORST #7 Ranking of High Heel Shoe Inserts & Insoles brands - by customers

BEST #1 to WORST #7 Ranking of High Heel Shoe Inserts & Insoles brands - by customers

7 High Heel Inserts and Insoles were ranked.  These 7 foot comfort products were chosen because they are 1. marketed specifically for high heels with a 2 inch heel or higher heel and are 2. designed to add comfort to high heels by holding back the foot from sliding forwards thereby decreasing pressure on the ball of the foot.

The ranking pattern from best to worst - #1 to  #7 - is directly aligned with high heel cushioning that feels softest and fits best.  When is comes to cushioning her foot in high heels women want a soft cushion that can be custom fitted to her unique foot in both arch height and foot length.   Any deviation from that ideal leads to negative reviews of the high heel shoe cushion brand because the insert or insole does not work to provide comfort like it is supposed to.

Negative reviews also result from problems directly created for the foot by poorly designed insoles that do not function as well in reality as they do in theory.  All the inserts and insoles functioned as designed for some women, therefore all the foot comfort products had at least one positive 5 star review from a customer. The ranking is a result of looking at ratios of positive to negative reviews without regard to the  numbers of reviews.

The best foot cushions, ranked #1 and #2  are soft underfoot and will fit any arch height.  Both #1 and #2 are made from soft PORON foam and neither have material in the arch area that is intended to be weight bearing therefore there are no issues with regard to the arch for either.  The #1 ranked inserts can be fitted to any length of foot, whereas the #2 ranked insoles do not fit all lengths of feet. The #1 ranked inserts do not crowd the foot due to the narrowing of the inserts at the front end and help add comfort by stopping forward slide of the foot. The #2 ranked insoles are wider under the toe area crowding the forefoot for some wearers plus allows the foot to slide forward causing discomfort to the toes.

Gel 3/4 insoles are ranked in the middle range in comfort at rankings #3, #4 and #5 . Gel is softer and squishier than resin insoles so they will mold better to the contours of the foot. The gel insoles that were the most malleable fit the best and ranked the highest.  Gel insoles are comfortable throughout a wide range of arch heights due to their soft gel malleability but they are not as soft underfoot and do not rebound or absorb shock like inserts and insoles made from PORON foam. Gel insoles don't hold the foot back in some instances due to their slippery surface and their adhesive letting go from the insole.   Gel insoles are a fixed length therefore they are too short to cushion the ball of the foot adequately for many women.

Gel insoles that are made from soft gel and can be positioned more flexibly, such as at rank #3,  were ranked higher than harder gel insoles, at rank  #4, or insoles at rank #5,  that had hard gel ridges to stop forward slide but the ridges could not be fitted into a comfortable position.

The worst high heel insoles, ranked at #6 and #7, are made out of hard resin. They fit the poorest of all the insoles into the arch area of the foot. The design of the resin insoles is such that if they do not fit well at the arch they cannot provide comfort in the ball of the foot area.  The resin insoles are designed with a dome of resin that is supposed to fit snugly under the arch of the foot making the arch carry some weight of the wearer.  Some weight of the wearer is to be carried by the heel.  The weight that is carried by the arch and the heel is supposed to relieve pressure from the ball of the foot.  In this insole design the ball of the foot area does not need a cushion under it because in theory all, or most  the weight of the wearer is borne by the arch and the heel.  The resin insoles ranked at #6 has more sizes than the lowest ranked resin insoles at #7 rank, however neither of the resin insoles provided the level of comfort or customized fit that products made from PORON foam or gel provided.  Resin insoles also created many more problems for wearers than any of the other styles of inserts or insoles lowering their ranking due to negative reviews about the problems that were created.

Many problems of the resin insoles originated with the fit of the arch. If the dome part of the hard resin insoles does not fit the arch exactly the insoles don't work. If the dome is too high for a low arch there will be pain caused by upward pressure under the arch. If the dome of the insole does not touch a high arch the insoles become useless for providing foot comfort because the insoles cannot hold the foot from sliding forwards or relieve pressure off the ball of the foot.  The combination of not functioning as designed and the additional problems directly created by the resin insoles gives them the worst and second from worst ranking.

The study summarized in the photo is based on a synthesis of published *verified buyer reviews for 7 products currently sold for high heel comfort  on Amazon. (the complete texts for synthesis are reproduced in 'Resources Used ' in the last  several pages of this blog. Customer reviews data was collected Sept. 20, 2018)  Ranking is from #1 BEST to  #7 WORST , according to ratios of 5 stars to 1 star reviews. The products have varying amounts of reviews. The reviews are analyzed by ratios, not by volume. Reviews are all from years 2016-2018.

Negative product experiences

-did not make a huge difference , not enough padding  - Foot Petals keep feet from sliding  forward  to a point  - provided no padding for my pumps whatsoever

Problems experienced by users

-it makes the footbed softer, but also makes the shoe feel quite a bit smaller -it does move in some of my shoes and has fallen out – these are flimsy- they broke apart - the ball of the foot (part) just broke off the part with the actual stickem on the back-insoles are too thin

Negative product experiences

-they are not sticky enough, big enough,  your  feet slide around too much - bumpy and hard & very uncomfortable - feet still pretty much hurt after wearing heels

Problems experienced by users

-too thick, lifts foot up too high so when I walk shoes flop off– insoles are useless, too short for size 9 -did not fit size 10 --put more pressure on my bunion -too narrow and did not stay put very well –did not seem to fit with my heels, not as gel-like as I thought

 Problems experienced by users:

-they slip inside shoes which is very bad for open toes - they do no stick- arch support feels hard - does not fit plantar arch - they do not stay in place, gets bunched up- they slip inside shoes-(insole) slides and lifts after first wearing--too narrow- too short for shoe size 7, 9, 9.5, 10 - the arch support is so low it doesn’t even touch my feet

Negative product experiences

-these gel packs feel like big bumps in your shoe no matter how(you try to)find the right placement -wore heels for 45 minutes with insoles in shoes as directed, balls of my feet began to ache

Problems experienced by users

- do not fit in a pair of heels- only cushion the ball of the foot, has a toe ridge that is hard to get to align -a little too thick to put into a shoe & feel comfortable-n too small - not as good as insoles that are less than a dollar-challenging to get the proper placement (inside shoes)

Negative product experiences

-do not believe the hype of the scientific research, they do not work--my feet were in pure pain & numb all day & night  – had worn stilettos a few days prior without the product for comparison, & had exact same result

Problems experienced by users

they started shifting and scrunching together-when feet sweat they slip & do not work anymore-after wearing them for about a half hour could not stand the pain-they shifted my weight more toward the heel, relieved pressure from the ball of my foot & my toes, however the insoles are so hard, I had pain in the arch area of my foot for several days after wearing

Negative product experiences

-hurt my heel and did not hold my foot like described - did not really help me, I wear heels every day, no different with insoles - -no difference whatsoever in boots

Problems experienced by users

-does not work at all- did not help-did not do anything- totally did not work-not sure they do everything promised, they are alright but definitely do not meet all their claims-hard to position in one try, but instructions say to not remove & put back (the insoles into shoes)

 DISCUSSION:

Products with the least negative issues for users are from brands Killer Heels Comfortand Foot Petals. These two products are the most customizable and are made from soft rebounding material which is comfortable underfoot.  The two products ranked as 1 and 2 are made from PORON, which is a resilient material that moulds to the foot and  never flattens. PORON also has a non slip surface which helps stop forward slide of the foot. The product that is the most customizable by the user is Killer Heels Comfort inserts for high heels.  These inserts for high heels are in two parts that can be custom fitted to any foot length and has raised sections  to physically stop  the foot from slipping forward.  The product by Foot Petals of Women’s Killer Kushionz Insoles is made of a flat piece of PORON. It is soft and cushions the foot.  A flat PORON insole will stop some forward slide because the surface has some grip and does not get slippery when damp. Users complained that the Foot Petals product broke apart in use, is thin and that it did not stop all forward slide.

The gel high heel insole products rank in the middle, in positions of 3,4, and 5. Gels are materials with softness and give. The Dr Scholls and the Envelop insoles have a fixed length that can only be positioned with the heel of the insole at the heel of the foot.  This may leave the ball of the foot without cushioning because the ball of the foot part falls short of the wearers ball of foot. Some users complain about this.   Of the three gel insoles the Envelop insole, made of silicone gel,  appears to provide a more positive user experience than Dr Scholls or Amope and is ranked as number 3.  Users say that the silicone gel material is thin so it adds comfort without crowding the foot. . The Amope product is a half insole that fits into the forefoot area of a shoe.  There appears to be reported fitting problems related to proper positioning of the insole and positioning of the ridges that are supposed to fit against the front of the ball of the foot.  Amope is ranked 4th by the users out of the 7 products analyzed.

The most problematic shoe cushioning products for high heel shoes over 2 inches are InsoliaInsoles. These were ranked 7th. The second from the bottom at rank number 6 are Vivian Lou insoles.  Insoliaand Vivian Lou make high heel insoles from a clear resin material which users found to be hard.  The insoles made by Insolia and Vivian Lou cannot be custom fitted  by the user. The combination of an insole made from a relatively hard material, and little ability to custom fit the insole to the user’s feet, makes customers have negative experiences with both Insolia and Vivian Lou products. This ranks them as numbers 6 and 7 out of a group of 7.   According to user experiences with Insolia insoles the chances of a having a bad or negative experience with these is greater than the likelihood of having a positive experience. Customers who bought Vivian Lou insoles had only slightly more positive experiences.

According to buyer feedback Insola and Vivian Lou products work exactly as they are supposed to according to some buyers. The results of experiences for these two insoles are very polarized. Some people love them and some people hate them. People who love them may be people who happen to have the perfect arch shape for the product. But for a person who has a low arched foot the insoles raised area may push painfully into the underside of the arch of the wearer when the wearer’s weight is placed on it.   Conversely for a person with a high arched foot the raised area of the insole may not even touch the underside of their foot, making the insole useless for carrying the wearers weight or to keep pressure off the ball of the foot. Wearers at both extremes of arch height and configuration said as much about their experiences.

PROS as per reviewers:

my feet feel great. It's now noon and I'm going strong. I've worn these shoes only once before and couldn't make it all day.

It adds some extra padding under the ball of your foot and makes heels more bearable. You can even wear them with open toe heels, since they are relative small.

These fit well and don't move around

Challenging to get the proper placement and seems like the thicker "bubble" of gel should be under the arch of the foot,

very high, pointy-toed stilletos with no spare space in the toe box, but they were so thin it didn't crush me feet top to bottom, and though the shoes still killed my feet after several hours , time of wear was extended from 20 minuets

it made the pounding feeling in the ball of my foot go away

I was able to wear "So Kates" Llouboutins,  for more than an hour and not die.  I don’t have problems with high heels usually

Excellent product. Very comfy.

long wedding day, my feet were happy until the end. Highly recommend.

Wore on pair of stilettos and feet were comfortable all evening. highly recommend

able to go for hours in my ballroom dance heels

they work as described.  I can wear my heels for hours without any discomfort. Highly recommended!

put the inserts in my 2 1/2 inch heels for a party and I wore my heels all night (over 4 hours) with no discomfort at all!

great shock absorbers for protecting my knees

made it through the evening, most comfortable inserts I've found in 2016, most are useless

CONS as per reviewers:

I followed the directions but these gel packs feel like big bumps in your shoes no matter how you juggle them to find the right placement. I tried them in several shoes but same results. Waste of money.

just not pleased with the fit

too small, not what I expected it too be and not for heels.

No better than any other insert

these did do do what promised. wore heels for 45 minutes with insoles in shoes as directed. Then balls of my feet began to ache and I changed into flat shoes

These are very small, and don't fit in a pair of heels as they say they do

This item is highly over-priced and not as good as the insoles that are less than a dollar.

Did not work

Thought the extreme high heel ones would be even better - they aren't. They only have cushion on the ball of the feel and has a toe ridge that is hard to get perfectly align to the space between the ball of the foot and toe.

a little too thick to put in a shoe and feel comfortable for me

Extra cushy and soft. Need to be a little longer

good heel cushioning and comfortable,a bit short for 9.5

Flat shoes. Perfect arch support

these have to relieved some pain

bit short but they still seem to help me with comfort

Very comfortable and made with strong material

Helped fill the extra space in my high heels due to very narrow feet.

Wonderful insoles for any women who wears heels.

makes the shoe more comfortable than without

If the inserts fit, or even if they are a bit short they add comfort without adding bulk for most people who report liking  them.

Many people enjoy having an arch support

CONS as per reviewers:

too short and skinny for my feet

I was told that they would making wearing heels more comfortable, they did not. – made feet hurt

found the material quite uncomfortable

They aren't sticky enough, big enough, and your feet slide around too much.

very small, fit only a small portion of my soles, they move all the time in the shoes

did not notice much difference with these on

my feet feels numb after a while.

Too small, don't have any value.

really don't take all the pain away from standing and walking in heels

feet still pretty much hurt after wearing heels.

It works, but it's nothing special. It comes off a lot

bumpy and hard and very uncomfortable

didn't seem to fit right with my heels, not as gel like as I thought

Terrible, waste of money

Did not provide enough cushion nor support

did not fit my shoes – size 10

seem to bunch up under my arch

too short and too thick to use in my very average size 7.5 heels.

Too short – size 9

Too thick. Lifts foot up too high so when I walk shoes flop off

arch supports seem to stick up in the wrong spot. They do provide cushioning though.

These insoles are completely useless! Too short for size 9

put more pressure on my bunion.

doesn't stick to the shoes at all

too narrow and don't stay put very well

did not work as promised

PROS as per reviewers:

was a little skeptical having tried several other high heel shoe pads before. I wear high heels to work every day and was having pain on the ball of one of my feet. I got these based on the reviews from others. They came yesterday and I put them in my shoes this morning. Wow! I can't how comfortable they are. They can be installed temporarily or permanently. I have to many shoes to put them in all of my shoes but I am going to order several sets to install permanently in the shoes I wear most often and then keep this set as a floating set for my other heels. I highly recommend. Be sure to follow the directions on the installation so they are positioned correctly in your shoes

-have tried many inserts over the years and these are by far the best. The material is soft but the spring-back feature of the PORON makes it so that when you take a step, you get the right amount of gentle support.

-with some inserts, you need to wear them on and off for a while until your feet adjust to the new shape - not these - they feel great right away. And the nice thing about them is that they are not only for people with problems with their feet or for high-heel shoes - they are for everyone, men and women, as they make all types of shoes feel very comfortable. I can't say enough good things about these inserts

-as a picky customer with a fondness for heels, I have to carry around various products to adapt to changing conditions within the same day.
- these inserts are truly wonderful! They are like walking on air, and I had no pain on the ball of my foot when wearing (kitten) heels on cobbled streets in the heat, in new shoes.

-they are bouncy, and most importantly really do mitigate slide to the front of the shoe.

-they worked brilliantly.
-I had no issues with them staying in place. The seller also provides extra sticky attachments, so this seemingly prolongs use of the product

-these inserts are great. The insert is super soft. They really helped with cushioning my feet, which is great when you are wearing heels for a long time! They also helped keep my feet from sliding in my shoes.

-love these! I can't believe how much better my heels feel! Will reorder when needed.

-they really work as advertised. Will certainly tell everyone and will be a buyer for life!!

CONS as per reviewers:

I put a pair of these foot petals on the sandals, and now not only did it stop the slipping, my feet are much more cushioned than before! I have only worn the sandals with these in them for a day, but I think these are great!

Good support

Helpful

Raises the foot inside the shoe, but cushions

They make a hard shoe feel soft without adding bulk.

Love these

make shoes feel comfy

worked as expected

comfy

was able to wear heels all night clubbing

These are great for shoes or sandals where your foot slides forward. Also, I love the softness of the footbed with these inside

Like these

Made my shoes comfortable

These really REALLY made a difference, the balls of my feet didn't ache. I mean, they're not magic, I still had to take a load off every now and then, but they helped!

They do help with some killer heels I have.

 My wife loves them

All my shoes including designer ones have the petals in them.

These are the best shoe cushions I can find. They stay put, do not slide around and really cushion the ball of your foot when wearing high heels, they last a long time

never fail to make my shoes fit right & feel comfortable!

Amazing they make such a difference!

Makes a difference in comfort while walking in the shoes

I want to put these in all my shoes, 50 pairs

I have experienced the stick in and out gel kinds shifting as the day goes on. These are great cushion options to stick into the shoe and last

They work like I hoped they would. Now my feet don't slide down to the toe.

if you don't want your feet sliding forward in your shoes. They really work! I have them in almost every pair of my higher heels/sandals. Great buy!

Provided some extra padding but parts of it were starting to get loose and detached

I needed something to keep my feet from sliding forward in a pair of high-heeled sandals. These did the trick.

Make my wedge sandals so much more comfortable

Very comfortable to wear. These do not move around when walking

Worked very well to line my open back sandals and keep them from slipping back and forth. Also cushions the foot and makes your feet feel much better

Just what my narrow feet needed to stop sliding

Keeps my shoes comfortable and so my feet won't slide forward

Very soft and yet gave me real comfort in my shoes

Love Foot Petals - I could NOT wear my summer sandals without them

CONS as per reviewers:

soft to touch and comfortable, but too small

These are flimsy

Not enough foot coverage

Makes no difference in the wear of the shoe

Barely cushions

Not as cushioned as I expected.

These cushions have given me no cushion in my shoes at all

did nothing to cushion my foot

The staightness of them makes them less versatile than the Tip Toes by Foot Petals which I absolutely swear by.

the ball-of-foot pad just broke off the part with the actual stick'em on the back

Too narrow for shoes, but they do the trick.

They help some but not as much as I'd hoped

Didn't feel a difference at all

curled up around my toes in my shoe, driving me absolutely crazy. Had to take my shoe off to not only wrestle the insert flat, but to reposition it several times over.

Didn't keep me from sliding out of my shoes

If the shoes don't fit, these are not going to make any difference

No foot support!

I went to adjust them and they tore

By mid day the petal part was separated from the rest on the right foot, they were super comfy while they lasted

Very cheap and thin!

I like that they provide extra cushion and make my feet feel comfortable wearing high heels. But the adhesive tape doesn't go all the way; it stops at the ball of the foot...so the petal part lifted up as I walked, and when my foot hit the petal, it broke off...leaving the ball of foot without cushion

added a tiny bit more comfort but fell apart after I wore them a couple times

After 4hrs of standing, walking and dancing at a wedding, the adhesive on the petals were gone and the petal was sliding out of my shoes.

They were comfortable and I think they helped my feet stay more comfortable in my shoes. However, the next day when I was trying to remove the Foot Petals from my shoes, they broke apart

helped a tiny bit in stopping my feet slipping out of my sandals, but they really didn't make a huge difference

not enough padding for my feet

Provided no padding for my pumps whatsoever

These Foot Petals keep your feet from sliding forward to a point

It makes the footbed softer, but also makes the shoe feel quite a bit smaller. It does move on some of my shoes and has straight up fallen out

do not add any comfort to my heels

These insoles are too thin and too soft to make much difference, and they don't help with shoes lacking arch support

problem with the adhesive backing running down the center of the item. The strip is not long enough, so I'll have to get separate shoe glue to glue the product better into the shoe. It moved around somewhat during my night. Would make the purchase again, it saved my little feet a lot of discomfort

not very cushiony

too short- choice of providing relief for my heel or the balls of my feet, but not both

These cushions are made of a single layer of a rubbery material that doesn't hold up to bending

the 2-3mm of the foot petals pushed my feet upwards out of the shoe caused my heels to pop out of my shoes as I was walking- Cutting about 10cm off of the back of the foot petal solved my problem

 Doesn't really help with anything

They feel like your standard thin foam that does practically nothing, not like shock absorbing PORON

they did make my high heels "better"; but I won't say they make my high heels as comfortable as my sneakers, flats, or shoes with less than 2 inches tall.

insoles are way too thin and provide absolutely no cushion.

These just don't have enough cushion to make much of a difference in how comfortable the shoes you put them in are

I do get some relief for the ball of my foot but not as much as I had hoped.

I wanted to re-adjust the alignment, those things just ripped

More comfortable for my wood soled shoes, just don't expect a miracle

I do feel a lot of pressure in the ball of my foot in platforms & platform stilettos, these are definitely thin and made my shoes bearable for about 4 hours of being on my feet but then that was it

increased the discomfort in my shoe by being too thin and pushing my foot upward and forward, causing me to get blisters.

they're really best for sandals and heels, and shoes where you need the insoles to be discreet,  not so great in boots, or other closed toe flats,

not suitable to keep your foot from sliding forward

does not prevent foot from sliding forward. I have a pointed toe shoe in which I have placed this and it still slips forward and makes it very hard to walk in

When you insert the pad in your shoe and you have no extra room this make your shoe feel like it doesn't fit anymore

Insolia Insoles

Claims made by Insolia:

* Adjusts the pitch of feet in shoes.

* Shifts weight off the ball of the foot.

* Stops feet from slipping forward. * Improves ankle stability.

* Decreases strain on legs, back, hips + knees.

Wear shoes 4x longer without pain. * Ideal for 1 inch and higher heels.

Insolia Heels work by shifting weight from the ball of the foot back to the heel by  causing the large heel bone, (Calcaneous), to rotate slightly back, this causes the force that would normally slide down to the balls of your feet, to remain back at the heel, and the pressure on your forefoot is reduced.

Actually worked - I could feel the difference! It truly shifts the weight to the heel from the ball of your foot. I was able to dance in my heels all night!

Little but powerful, want them in all my heels

Insoles are fabulous, absolutely the best option for wearing high heels, they stop your foot from sliding forward and the shoe cutting into your toes

these insoles are the best. They keep your feet from sliding forward in heels

great product

I've been using these for years, and I truly put them in every heel I have

CONS as per reviewers:

DOES NOT work at all. It feels no different than not wearing it.

Didn’t work

Didn't do anything

Didn’t help

hurt my heel and didn't hold my foot like described

totally did not work

they did not wokr

I used these in my boots and noticed no difference whatsoever.

Hard to position at one try, but instructions say to not remove and put back

not sure they do everything promised. They are alright but definitely don't meet all their claims.

didn't really help me. I wear heels every day and it didn't seem any different with the insoles in

PROS as per reviewers:

the shift of weight

these really did reduce stress on my feet.

when standing I was able to notice the difference in my toes (I could tell they weren't carrying a lot of the weight).

The next morning I was able to feel the soreness and tenderness of wearing high heels, but the recuperation time was only one day

 2 to 2 1/2” block heels and I m very comfortable

insoles to reduce the pressure (and the pain and fatigue) on the ball of my foot

I love that they shift my weight onto my heals so I can wear my shoes longer

really worked in my 3.5" heels

Less foot pressure when standing in heels for a long time!

Expensive but they work.

3-4 hours before I felt any discomfort!

able to keep them(4” heels)  on all night (while dancing)

These do what they say they do. They work but, when your feet starts to sweat then the slip doesnt really help anymore.

took the pressure of my metatarsil part of my forefoot, which usually hurts like you know what

felt a slight difference.

Need them for the shoes that may put a little more stress on my feet - they are perfect!

Danced in my 4 inch heels for a couple hours with no pain!

insoles took all the pain away, worth it

walking, and I could actually tolerate it

found I could stand longer but still needed to take breaks to relieve the pressure.

Less foot pressure when standing in heels for a long time!

CONS as per reviewers:

Didn’t do what they said they would

My feet felt no better or no worse than normal inserts

the insoles did not do one single thing for me.... feet ached immediately

have to readjust one throughout the day – if they stay put they work

did not work because it did not stick or stay stuck

it did not work due to the wrong shape

They shifted my weight in the shoe more toward the heel, which relieved pressure from the ball of my foot and my toes. However, the insoles are SO HARD, I had pain in the arch area of my foot for several days after wearing them

came loose and can’t be restuck

inserts did absolutely nothing. You don't even feel them in your shoe. They do not shift your weight. They do NOTHING.

wore these for an hour,it didn’t really make a difference after standing for a while the ball of my feet were hurting.

sides kept pulling away, peeling upwards & I kept having to press them back down

I had worn stilettos a few days prior without the product for comparison and it had the exact same result.

they started shifting and scrunching together

I couldn't get them to feel comfortable in my shoe

They do not work like they say they do

Don’t believe the hype of the ‘scientific research’ They don’t work.

my feet were in pure pain & numb all day & night.
